breathless (2022)

for string quartet and electronics

artwork by Nathaly Gutierrez (2021)

This piece is based on several research variables from a seven-minute wildfire observation done by the SJSU Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center. I designated a different set of data to each instrument: Violin I represents Total Heat, Violin II represents Convective Heat, Viola represents Radiant Heat, and Cello represents Temperature. In my attempt to map this data into different sound parameters for the quartet, I assigned dynamics, bowing techniques, and specific strings of the instrument to certain segments of the data. For instance, the lowest points in the data would have the performers playing only on their lowest string at the softest dynamic using sul ponticello. The movement that occurs within that segment of data would only be played on the assigned string and the performer would glissando across the string until the next segment begins.

In addition to this, there is also a fixed media track that is being played at the same time and with the same duration as the ensemble (3 minutes). This track features automation in volume and panning to represent the Vertical & Horizontal Wind data, respectively.
