for percussion trio and electronics
This piece explores the different musical elements of percussion instruments, such as timbre and rhythm, and how they can coexist with similar elements within electronics (accompanying one another in some way). I was curious to see how one medium might be able to complement the other as I explored these musical elements. The first movement focuses on rhythms, thus I chose to include more non-pitched and less resonant instruments such as timbales and woodblocks as the main soloists. The corresponding media track also includes more rhythmic elements, either through the recorded samples of the instruments used in this movement or through oscillators which are playing at a frequency that results in a much more rhythmic effect.
The second movement explores timbre, which ultimately led me to include more resonant, mostly pitched, instruments that are versatile in regards to timbre such as triangles, vibraphone, and cymbals. The media track in this movement gradually explores each one of the instruments mentioned in different sections. Unlike the first movement, where the fixed media served as more of an accompaniment for the performers, this movement focuses a bit more on the electronics, so the performers now accompany what is being played.
Movement 2 - performed by Monte Eoff, Justin Griffin, and Andrew Kuykendall
