sunset parallels & Aftermath (2021)
for bassoon duet
artwork by Alex Tsoukas (2019)
This was originally written for French Horn and Bass Clarinet, but was arranged for two bassoons for this recital in particular. Why two bassoons? you may be wondering, 1. Relatively matched the timbre/range of the original instruments so it didn’t require as much editing in the parts itself 2. Bassoons sound very cool and after writing the original version I always wanted to rearrange it for two of the same instruments after listening to “Black” by Marc Mellits for two bass clarinets - and it would’ve matched the theme of “parallels” from the painting.
Speaking of the painting, this piece was ALSO inspired by art - which is shown above, with the same title, painted by Alex Tsoukas in 2019. From the artist: “This painting is a crossover between landscape and the abstract. As the abstract shapes developed into architectural structures, I then began the process of elimination. The painting then took on a whole new life. A story of past, present and future. A reminder of not only what we are so fortunate enough to have, but also of what we once had, and what we could hopefully still have, at least for as long as nature and the universe intended it. There is such an incomprehensible divide in our societies and cultures, but we all have one universal thing in common; our home, Planet Earth.”
